The Homegrown Texas Jam was a free weekly concert that went head to head with, and beat, Live Nation’s weekly Party on the Plaza series. with the new generation of Texas Music artists. Every Thursday evening featured live free performances by hot young artists such as Charlie Robison, Cory Morrow, and Jack Ingram and Texas Music legends like Jerry Jeff Walker and David Allen Coe. Featured performers include Roger Creager and Bill Pekar, Reckless Kelly and Honey Brown, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Radney Foster and more. With roots in country, folk, blues, and rock, Texas Music came out of the Hill Country around Austin and became the hot new trend.

Catching up with live Lone Star music doesn’t cost more than a beer or two at the Garden in the Heights on Thursdays through October. The inaugural performance in the Homegrown Texas Jam concert series kicks off tonight with Jack Ingram.
Presented by local promoters Bob Fuldauer and Michael Martin of Underway Productions and KIKK (95.7 FM), the homegrown jams are meant to be a celebration of the music that has sprung up around Austin’s Hill Country and migrated east to Houston.
Other acts booked this month include Charlie Robison on Aug. 23 and Roger Creager on Aug. 30. Future shows will include Delbert McClinton, Guy Clark, Honeybrowne and Reckless Kelly.
Shows will start at 6 p.m. at the Garden in the Heights, 3926 Feagan. Attendants must be 21 or older. Food and drink will be available. A portion of each week’s proceeds will benefit Assist the Officer, a nonprofit foundation for injured or disabled Houston police, as well as the Saltwater Conservation Association. After-show party: Don’t get caught with nowhere to go following your next night out at the Houston Arena Theatre. Head over to the penthouse view at Scott Gertner’s SkyBar and get through the door for half price.
The theater and club have forged an alliance that allows a party to continue until 2 a.m. after select shows. Present your Arena ticket stub at the club door (night of the concert only) and get half off that night’s SkyBar cover charge to catch a second concert featuring Gertner’s contemporary-fusion band.

Free preview: Country superstar Tim McGraw will appear on NBC’s Today show Friday morning as part of its Summer Concert Series. After performing three new songs, including Grown Men Don’t Cry, Angel Boy and Things Change, McGraw will jump on a plane bound for Houston to continue his Set This Circus Down tour at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion that evening.
Coming soon: One of the best concerts of last year was the trad-rock invasion of Scottish band Travis at Numbers. The group’s three-minute bursts of smart rock are the most promising seedlings from the Brit-pop tree since Radiohead. The group returns to Houston on Oct. 16 at Aerial Theater in support of its latest album, The Invisible Band. Alternative-rock quintet Remy Zero opens the show. Tickets go on sale through Ticketmaster on Aug. 25.

Houston-grown eclectic metal band King’s X releases it ninth studio album, Manic Moonlight, on Sept. 25. Song titles from the new album include False Alarm, Believe and Vegetable. Bassist Doug Pinnick also is staying active in his side project, Poundhound. The group’s second album, Pineappleskunk, came out in June, and Pinnick comes home for a live show at the Engine Room on Nov. 24. Call 713-654-7846.
Pushed back:Glitter, Mariah Carey’s new album and the soundtrack to her new movie of the same name, has been waylaid three weeks to allow the singer more time to recover from “an emotional and physical breakdown,” according to her Virgin Records representives. The new release date is Sept. 11. The movie is scheduled to be released on Sept. 21.
Canceled: The Powerman 5000-led metal fest scheduled for Oct. 3 at the Aerial Theater has been squelched. The show, also boasting up-and-coming angry openers Saliva, Machinehead and Half Cocked, was scrapped after DreamWorks moved the release of Powerman 5000’s new album, Anyone For Doomsday?, from Aug. 28 back to the fall.
